The 6D in UX Design Process

The 6D in UX design process stands for:

01 DISCOVER

The first step of a product development is to discover what the product development demands. Gather all the required data that is to be used in further processes. UX Designers should check for the Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How of the topic’s background. Then, he will have a better understanding of the issue and its reason.

The data gathering can be done by many ways like:

  1. FOCUS GROUPS: Gather 7-10 people to discuss about the issues and concerns of the characteristics of the user interface.
  2. INTERVIEWS/SURVEYS: Interviews can be taken with the stakeholders and users to know their pain points, goals, frustrations etc. Surveys can also be a powerful tool is you want to gather data from a large audience.

02 DEFINE

Once the data is gathered, one needs to define the problem statement. This is an important step in UX. Knowing the problem is quite important, without it you won’t be able to provide the solution.

There are plenty of ways to define a problem statement and they are:

  • BRAINSTORMING: Teams use this to generate ideas, by using ‘How might we’ technique, coming up with possible solutions and then drawing links between them to find a potential solution.
  • STORY BOARDING: Story boarding can help you by providing sequence of states in the form of a story that tells about what a user will go through while using the product in future.
  • USER PROFILING: User profiling are real people’s personas that talks about their goals, motivation, pain points, frustrations while using an existing product.

Once the problem is diagnosed, you can provide a step-by-step solution based on the approaches followed.

03 DESIGN

Here comes the most creating part of the entire UX process-DESIGNING!

But there’s a catch. You cannot design once and move it to the development team. If you do this, making even a small change will seem like a mountain to the designers.

You can use different methods for providing an efficient design like wireframing, prototyping, Visual designing etc. 

The designing process must be iterative to providing the best solution and the best user experience to the users.

Usability must be the first priority instead of aesthetics. Keep the designs simple and clean.

04 DEVELOP

Once the designing of the product is over, the designs are passed on to the developers.

This is the actual development stage of any design.

The developers code and provide backend logic by using languages like Java, Python, etc.

05 DEPLOY

Deploy means making your project ready to be used. This is the very last step of UX Designing.

This stage consists of:

  • UI assessments, User testing-alpha/beta testing, compliance checking to get to know the flaws in the design and rectify them.
  • Once the testing is done, user trainings are provided for the users to get a hands-on-experience with the designs.

06 DELIVER

Finally, the product is delivered to the users.

Regular maintenance checking is done to ensure the users are not facing any difficulties.

New features are also added by following the entire 6D process and then are delivered to the users.
