What is Collect for Output in CorelDraw?

So, as the name suggests Collect for Output is the process of the retaining the original files along with its associated files. It is created as a separate folder which contains a copy of the CorelDRAW File (CDR) along with all the associated files.

Herein, the associated files consider all the elements that support the main CDR file. It includes the copy of the CDR file, the fonts, colour profile etc. We can also create a PDF file for the collect for output folder if we use any externally linked images in the file.

Why there is a Need for Collect for Output?

As a professional, it is the duty of the graphic designer to provide all the necessary information to the client/ printing agency/ any other concerned professional so that they are able to view the file with all the necessary elements and suggest the changes or print the same as is designed by the graphic professional.

Any information that is missing in the main document can cause a miscommunication and might lead to a different design altogether.

The points below clearly summarise the purpose for which Collect for Output is used in Corel Draw:

A. To avoid the issue of missing fonts:

After the design, the most important thing that attracts anyone to a design is the font. A font that is attractive yet understandable to the audience. Apart from the fonts available in the software, many fonts are exported from external sources to make the design look more attractive.

If these fonts are exported and saved to the collect for output folder, they get reflected in the main design and the design of the same isn’t compromised upon.

    B. Creates a good impression on the client

Any element missing in the design creates a bad impression on the client and contributes in them losing trust on the professionalism on the graphic designer. But if the missing elements are provided by the graphic designer in the collect for output folder, then all the elements are accurately available in the design and are design is presentable.

      C. To avoid delay in the printing process

If the main CDR file is sent to the printing press without the collect for output folder, then the essential design enhancing elements- images, fonts etc. become missing in the main design because of which they have to be sent again with the copy of the CDR file. This delays the entire printing process causing a delay in the further procedures.

As discussed before, collect for output process is beneficial in times when you need to send the files to the client or to the printing agency who need to see the file with the imported fonts, colour profiles etc. This keeps the look of the document intact and makes it presentable.

Example: Suppose you are making a pamphlet for a Kindergarten named Little Bells Pre School. Herein, keeping in mind the element of children, we need to add fonts and colours that attract the parents an the parents are persuaded to have a look at the pamphlet.

Considering the fonts, they need to be soft ended instead of being bold and sharp edged.

        Example:

        CorelDraw Fonts

One can get fonts like these in the CorelDraw Software but if they aren’t available, they need to be imported from various websites and then need to be added to the CorelDraw document to give the design the exact look for which an idea layout has been created.

These fonts can be easily installed from the online websites and can be incorporated in the file with the use of Collect for Output option. The installed font can then be moved to a folder where all such imported elements are present. This fain CDR file along with the copy of the file and the Collect for Output folder can then be sent to the concerned parties.

Hence, we can conclude that Collect for Output is an essential option that can be used to preserve all the important elements in a CDR file by not compromising on its look while sending to the client for approvals as the conditions agreed upon or to the printing agency or to any other concerned person for that matter.
