Planning is extremely important before making any video for the business, be it a training video, or any short online business video. Creating a storyboard is one of the most important stages of planning a video.
What is a Storyboard?
A storyboard is a graphical representation of how and what the video will contain shot wise.
It consists of a number of squares in a sequence with illustrations or pictures representing each shot, with a description of what is the shot is all about and what will be said in the script during that shot.
Need of Storyboard
Creating a storyboard requires extra work in the process of making a video for the business.
Following are the three reasons why storyboard is important:
1. Best way to express your vision
A visual aid makes it much simple to share and explain the vision of video with others.
With the help of a storyboard, one can demonstrate exactly how different scenes are going to be mapped and what it will look like. This makes it easier for other people to understand your idea.
2. Makes production much easier
Storyboard for a video means preparing a plan for video making, including all the shots which will be required, the order in which they will be laid out, and how the visuals will interrelate with the script.
The storyboard is a starting point around which one can plan the coverage (all the angles one will shoot a scene). This really comes in handy at the time of making a video, as it ensures nobody will forget any scenes and helps to bring all pieces together for the video according to the vision.
3. Saves time
While it may take the time to put storyboard together, it will save time in the long run at the time of revisions later. It will help in explaining the vision as well as making the creation process go smoothly.
Process of Making A Storyboard
1. Create blank slides
Example: Template for Storyboarding
Creating a storyboard will be the first step in which sequence of squares will be drawn on a piece of paper or free printable storyboard templates available online can be downloaded.
In the above example, think of the squares as the video frame. In every single square, a different shot or scene will take place. Each scene can be sketched by hand or can be created on a computer.
2. Sketch your story and add your script
Example: How beautifully Abi Sashi has created “Mickey Mouse” storyboard
After making the template, the next step should be to sketch how each scene will look visually.
Some important steps are:
- It is very important to show what is happening in the scenes, which characters are in the scene and how the general framing will look like.
- Take notes and lines from the script and insert them after scene or illustration describing what is happening in each frame.
- Your storyboard should look like a comic book, so that readers or clients can get an idea of what exactly will happen in the video.
- Particulars about various camera angles and movement, transitions between shots and other details can also be added that will be useful during production and post production.
Storyboarding can seem a long process at first, but it’s an essential part of video making process. Many animation professional institutes involve Storyboarding as the first step in the process of video making. It can help envision the ideas, ensuring what you are suggesting, and it will help the production and editing team to execute the vision while saving time. So, take a paper and a pen and start the process of storyboarding today!
